"Great experience renting a construction dumpster from Toronto Metal Traders. The driver was highly professional and took the time to lay down scrap wood to protect our asphalt driveway from damage. On top of that, they gave us an extra day with the bin at no additional charge. Excellent customer service and honest, flat-rate pricing. Five stars!"

If I could give TMT 100 stars out of 100, I honestly would. I found these guys completely by accident when I needed a bin for one of our renovation projects, and I’m so glad I did. Anyone who works in renovations or construction knows how frustrating it can sometimes be dealing with different companies. You call, nobody answers, you’re chasing people for updates, deliveries are late, or you just feel like nobody really cares. TMT was the complete opposite. From the very first phone call, everything was just easy. The communication was amazing, everyone I spoke with was friendly and helpful, and everything happened exactly when they said it would. No chasing anyone, no wondering when the bin was coming, no headaches. Even the little things impressed me. The bins themselves are in great condition, the drivers were great, and when they placed the bin on the driveway, they actually took the time to put protection underneath it. You can tell these guys care about what they do and about the people they're working with. It’s honestly refreshing to find a company like this, especially in our industry. When you're running renovation projects, you already have a hundred things to worry about, so having a company you can call and know that part of the job is going to be taken care of properly means a lot. It was an absolute pleasure dealing with TMT from beginning to end. They will 100% be my go-to guys for bins whenever we have projects in York Region. Amazing company, amazing people, amazing service. 100/100. Keep doing exactly what you're doing!

Bin Rental Sizes, Dimensions and Prices

We carry three bin sizes. Every price is flat rate and includes delivery, pickup, disposal, the weight shown, and 7 days.

The yard in a bin size is a cubic yard of space, not the length of the bin. A 10 yard dumpster holds about ten cubic yards, a 20 yard holds about twenty. The dimensions in the table are the actual measurements, which is what matters when you are working out whether it fits.

All three have barn doors at the back that swing open, so heavy material can be walked in rather than lifted over the side.

SizeDimensionsWeight includedFlat rate + HSTBest for
10 Yard12 x 6 x 4 ft1 ton (2,000 lbs)$388Smaller jobs and tighter spaces
14 Yard12 x 7 x 4.5 ft2 tons (4,000 lbs)$476Medium jobs, and good value when more weight is needed
20 Yard14 x 8 x 5 ft2.5 tons (5,000 lbs)$519Our most popular size. Large cleanouts and high volume general garbage, plus renovation and construction

The 10 yard is the smallest we carry, so it is the one to ask for if you want a small bin for a tight space. The 20 yard dumpster rental is currently the largest size we offer.

Lockable bins

A 10 yard lockable is $438, a 14 yard lockable is $526. Worth it if the bin is sitting somewhere open overnight. The 20 yard doesn’t have a lockable lid.

10 Yard Bin Rental

The 10 yard bin rental is the smallest we carry, and the one that fits where the other two won’t. At 12 by 6 feet it sits inside a single parking space, so a tight driveway or a narrow laneway is fine.

Good for a garage, a basement, an attic, one room at a time. Furniture and general household waste.

14 Yard Bin Rental

Take the 14 yard bin rental, or 14 yard dumpster, when what you are throwing out is heavy rather than bulky. It is the middle size, and it carries twice the weight of the 10 yard for $88 more.

Renovation debris weighs more than people expect. Drywall, plaster, tile and old subfloor add up fast, and the extra ton of weight allowance usually matters more than the extra room.

20 Yard Bin Rental

More of our bins go out as 20 yard than anything else. It’s the most versatile size we have. Most of the time it’s a large general garbage job: whole house and multi room cleanouts, moving and estate cleanouts, bulky furniture, anything high volume.

It holds a lot and still sits comfortably on most driveways, and the walls are not so high that loading turns into hard work.

It works for larger renovation and construction jobs too. It’s the biggest capacity we offer, and the one most people end up taking.

We Protect Your Driveway on Every Delivery

Standard on every residential delivery. You don’t have to ask for it.

A loaded bin weighs thousands of pounds. Put one straight onto asphalt, interlock or a poured driveway and it can mark the surface. So we put boards down under every bin before it comes off the truck, and the driver sets it so the load sits evenly.

We take driveway protection seriously, because a damaged driveway costs far more to fix than the bin cost to rent. If your driveway is new, interlock, or you have a particular spot in mind, tell us when you book and the driver will work to it.

How to Choose the Right Size

Order a bin that is too small and you are paying for a second haul, which costs far more than stepping up a size in the first place. Think about what the load weighs, not just how much room it takes up. Judging a bin by eye is the most common of the bin rental mistakes we see.

ProjectSizeWhy
Garage or basement cleanout10 yardLight material, fits a tight driveway
One room cleared out10 or 14 yard10 for light material, 14 if there is tile or cabinetry
Kitchen tear-out14 yardCabinets, counters and flooring in one load
Whole house or multi room cleanout20 yardHigh volume general waste, the job it is most often used for
Moving or estate cleanout20 yardMostly bulky, but can still go over the weight
Renovation across several rooms14 or 20 yardDepends how dense the debris is
Bulky furniture and appliances20 yardBulky, but appliances add weight fast

Three questions worth asking first

What am I throwing out? Heavy material like tile, plaster or wet carpet hits the weight allowance first. Light bulky material like furniture, cardboard and household waste usually runs out of room first.

How much room is there? All three fit a standard driveway. The 20 yard needs 14 feet of clear length plus room behind for the truck. Measure if it’s tight.

Is it all coming out at once, or over a few days? The 7 days are there so you can fill it as you go.

Still stuck between two? Call 416-991-5526, tell us what the job is and what you are getting rid of, and we’ll pick the bin with you. On larger jobs that may need more than one bin, we can look at coming out to see the site and plan it with you.

Weight Allowances and Overages

Landfills and transfer stations charge by weight, not volume. Which is why the weight included matters just as much as the price does.

BinIncludedOver that
10 Yard1 ton (2,000 lbs)$25 per 500 lbs
14 Yard2 tons (4,000 lbs)$25 per 500 lbs
20 Yard2.5 tons (5,000 lbs)$25 per 500 lbs

How an overage is worked out

You pay $25 for each extra 500 pounds.

Say you take a 14 yard bin, which includes 2 tons, and the load comes in at 4,300 lbs. You’re 300 lbs over, so that’s one 500-lb increment. $25.

If your bin exceeds the included weight allowance, we provide the third party scale ticket so you can see the recorded weight. If we are charging you an overage, you get to see exactly what the load weighed.

What adds weight quickly

Some material is heavier than it looks:

  • Plaster and drywall
  • Tile and stone flooring
  • Wet carpet, or anything that has been sitting in water
  • Solid wood furniture
  • Pressure-treated lumber, especially when wet

Household waste is usually lighter than renovation debris, but a cleanout can still tip over the included weight depending on what is in it. Not sure? Call and describe the load before you book.

What Goes in the Bin

Almost everything that comes out of a house, a cleanout or a renovation goes straight in.

TypeWhat that covers
HouseholdFurniture, boxes, clothing, toys, general household waste, small appliances
CleanoutsBasement, garage, attic and storage clearouts, moving and estate cleanouts
Renovation and constructionWood and lumber, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, countertops, doors, windows, trim and general construction debris
WoodPressure-treated lumber and wooden skids or pallets. Tell us first if there is a large quantity, as it gets heavy when wet
Yard and gardenYard waste: branches, hedge trimmings, leaves and garden clearing
MetalAppliances, railings, fixtures, framing
PackagingCardboard, boxes, wrapping

Heavy materials we cannot take

We currently do not accept soil, dirt, concrete, brick, asphalt or clean fill.

That’s an equipment limit, not a disposal one. Our truck and our 10, 14 and 20 yard bins are built for general waste and ordinary renovation and construction debris. Fill one of them with concrete or soil and it can end up too heavy for the truck to lift safely. At that point it isn’t a question of whether we want to take it. We physically can’t pick it up.

If any of it ends up in a bin anyway, we won’t be able to collect the bin until it’s taken out. There isn’t necessarily an additional charge for that, but if emptying it takes you past the included 7 days, the usual $20 a day applies.

If your job has material like that, call before you book and we’ll tell you straight whether we can help.

What is not allowed

Anything hazardous, chemical or under pressure: tires, motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries; paint, solvents and cleaning chemicals; pesticides and industrial chemicals; medicines and medical waste; propane tanks, aerosol cans and any pressurised cylinder.

None of it can go to a standard landfill. It needs specialist disposal. Certain prohibited items, such as paint, hazardous materials and tires, carry a minimum $100 additional disposal fee.

If you’re not sure about something, ask before it goes in the bin. Easier than dealing with it after.

How Long You Keep It

Every dumpster rental includes 7 days, counted from the day the bin lands. After that it is $20 a day.

If the job runs long, just tell us and we’ll leave it there.

Avoiding extra days

  • Book delivery for the day work starts, not the day you decide to do it
  • Stage material near where the bin will sit so loading is quick
  • Fill it as you go rather than waiting for the last day
  • Call for pickup as soon as you are done

Common Questions About Dumpster Sizes

Start with what you are throwing out, not just how much of it there is. Roughly: a 10 yard dumpster for smaller jobs and tight spaces, a 14 yard when the load is heavy rather than bulky, a 20 yard for large cleanouts and high volume general waste. Stuck between two? Call and describe the job.

The 20 yard dumpster, by a distance. It handles the widest range of jobs: enough capacity for a whole house or multi room cleanout, but it still fits comfortably on most driveways and the walls are low enough to load without a fight.

Two feet longer, a foot wider, another 1,000 lbs of weight allowance. $43 between them. The 20 yard is 14 by 8 by 5 feet with 2.5 tons included; the 14 yard is 12 by 7 by 4.5 feet with 2 tons. Take the 14 when the load is heavy for its size, the 20 for a big general cleanout.

A 14 yard dumpster covers most kitchen tear-outs. Cabinets, counters, appliances, drywall, flooring, and the 2 tons included covers the weight of it. Small kitchen, or you’re only doing part of it? A 10 yard will often do.

The 20 yard. That is the job it is most often rented for. Household contents are usually bulky rather than dense, but a full house can still go over the included weight depending on what is in it, so tell us what is going in when you book.

A 10 yard bin rental handles most of them, one area at a time, furniture and boxes and small appliances included. Clearing more than one room? Step up to the 14 or the 20.

Usually, yes. It is 14 feet long and 8 feet wide, so you need 14 feet of clear length plus room behind for the truck. What actually catches people out is low branches and hydro wires, not the driveway. We put boards down under every bin to protect the surface.

The 10 yard and the 14 yard. A 10 yard lockable is $438, a 14 yard lockable is $526. Worth it if the bin’s sitting somewhere open overnight. The 20 yard doesn’t have one.

A second haul costs far more than the gap between sizes. It is $88 between the 10 and the 14 yard, and $43 between the 14 and the 20. If you genuinely can’t tell, size up. Going over the included weight is the cheaper mistake anyway: $25 per extra 500 pounds.

If Your Project Has a Lot of Steel

This is where we can offer something most bin companies can’t.

Toronto Metal Traders has been a scrap metal company since 2002. If your job is going to throw off a decent amount of steel, keeping it separate usually beats burying it in the general waste and paying disposal on it.

On a larger job that can mean two bins: one for general waste, and one strictly for steel. Depending on how much metal there is and what it weighs, the value of the steel can cover the cost of providing and servicing that bin. In some cases it can offset some or all of the cost of the waste bin as well, and depending on the amount of metal, there could even be a payout to you.

If you think there’s real steel coming out of the job, mention it when you call and we’ll work out whether a second bin makes sense.
